Animal Liberation ACT & NSW announced on 12 June, 2012 that Wally's Piggery in Murrumbateman and Tennesse Piggery in Young are no longer in operation and the RSPCA confirmed its closure in the Canberra Times on Saturday 15 June. A big thank you to everyone who called, emailed, signed the petition, or raised awareness about pig farming in Australia by sharing our photos and videos following our investigation in August last year (view pics from the rally we held in August 2012).
A later investigation shows that Wally’s Piggery was never just a “rogue operator”. Animal Liberation ACT recently obtained footage from Ean Pollard’s Lansdowne Piggery in Young NSW, where hundreds and hundreds of pregnant pigs scream and thrash, trying in vain to escape their tiny metal cages (known as sow stalls) while showing signs of insanity and starvation. The single eight-minute continuous shot isn’t “graphic”, but it’s still very difficult to sit through. Right now, hundreds of thousands of pigs across Australia are suffering in cages just like these.
In December, 2014 Animal Liberation ACT was appalled by the withdrawal of the case against Wally and Stephanie Perenc, the operators of Wally's Piggery. The deplorable conditions in this piggery just outside Canberra were brought to light in August 2012. General community outrage was expressed across the nation. Almost a year to the day after Animal Liberation ACT & NSW's investigation into this travesty of a 'farm' was released, the RSPCA NSW laid 53 charges against the operators, including 12 counts of alleged aggravated animal cruelty. Now, more than 2 years after the initial investigation, RSPCA NSW has revealed that it has dropped ALL charges against the piggery operators. No compelling reason for dropping the charges has been provided by the animal welfare organisation. Indeed, for most of its brief statement about the dismissal of the case it blamed the very activists who brought the case to light. Without these activists, there is little doubt the operators of Wally's Piggery would be still be farming pigs today. Now, thanks to the dismissal of the case, they can do so again.
This is a catastrophic failure of the legal system to protect the most vulnerable and exploited beings in our society: farmed animals. Animal Liberation ACT held a rally to ask: RSPCA - WHERE IS THE JUSTICE?
